About IDM
On 26th November 2019, UNESCO declared the 14th of March, previously designated as Pi Day, as the ‘International Day of Mathematics’. The day 14/03/2020 was celebrated as the first edition of International Day of Mathematics (IDM). It has been decided that every year, a new theme will be selected to flavour the celebrations. The theme for 2020 was "Mathematics is Everywhere". The theme for the 2021 edition is "Mathematics for a Better World". Now, why was it called ‘Pi Day’ in the first place? If we write the date 14th March in the Month-Date-Year format, we get 3/14 or 3.14, the approximate value of π (pi) correct up to two decimal places. The idea behind IDM, or the erstwhile ‘Pi Day’, is to cherish the originality behind and the origin of Mathematics, to connect people and to make them aware about its undeniable importance in the real world.
In keeping with the spirit of the day, the Applied Mathematics and Humanities Department, SVNIT, Surat, organised a "Mathematics Colloquium" to mark the occasion, last year. Emboldened and encouraged by the excellent response to the first edition of the event, we've embarked upon presenting a second, albeit online only, edition this time around.
